Field Excursion New Zealand 2023
In February and March of 2023, a field trip was carried out in New Zealand as part of the WEARING_DOWN project. Arindam Biswas (Ph.D. student, working with Prof. Dr. Tony Reimann) along with Louise Karman-Besson and Prof. Stephane Bonnet (Ph.D. student and Co-supervisor from the University of Toulouse, France) conducted this field excursion to the South Island of New Zealand. The goal of this field trip was to collect samples from multiple river channels (active and modern) for the analysis of the natural luminescence of sediments along with the determination of catchment-wide denudation rates.
WEARING_DOWN project is a French-German collaborative project funded by both the ANR and DFG. The goal of the WEARING_DOWN project is to develop new tools for quantifying sediment production and transfer at the Earth’s surface, from weathering and erosion on hillslopes to transport in fluvial systems, with a particular emphasis on the intermediate time scale based on the natural luminescence of sediments, combined with state-of-the-art quantification of rates of surface processes by in-situ TCN (for example: 10Be), including the use of in-situ cosmogenic 14C.
