KPA School Outreach Event – Exploring the Carbon Cycle

In November 2025, Junior Professor Dr Svenja Riedesel, Junior Professor Dr Katharina Pfannerstill and Dr Anita Katheras visited a secondary school as part of the carbon cycle outreach programme organised by the Stiftung Wissen of Sparkasse Köln/Bonn. During the event, the researchers introduced the students to their respective fields of research and explained the importance of the carbon cycle for our climate and the environment.

Alongside the theoretical background, the focus was on hands-on activities. The students measured atmospheric CO₂ concentrations using scientific instruments and explored crystal structures and crystal lattices through computer-based visualisations. The interactive session provided valuable insights into scientific methods and gave the students the opportunity to experience research first-hand.
