Working group Economic and Labour Geography

The research and teaching activities of the Economic and Labour Geography Research Group focus in particular on the following fields:

  • Global production and regional development in the Global South
  • Digital and sustainability transformations in global production networks
  • Labour conditions and organising in global production networks

Drawing on perspectives from relational economic geography and labour geography, the research group examines the spatial and social dynamics of global production and their implications for sustainable and socially just regional development. Particular attention is paid to power relations, spatial and intersectional inequalities, and the role of workers, trade unions and social movements as actors in global production networks.

Current research focuses on the digital transformation of work and the digitalisation of sustainability governance in global production networks, particularly in the agrifood and garment industries. Geographically, the group’s research activities focus on Latin America, South Africa, South Asia and Germany.
