Beyond offshoring: tradable services and regional value chains in the Global South

Abstract:

The research project "Poverty Dynamics and Sustainable Development: A Long-Term Panel Project in Thailand and Vietnam", in short Thailand Vietnam Socio-Economic Panel (TVSEP), is a long-term project that conducts primary surveys in cooperation with researchers in Thailand and Vietnam. The TVSEP project has been continuing the work of the DFG research group (FOR 756) "Impact of Shocks on the Vulnerability to Poverty: Consequences for Development of Emerging Southeast Asian Economies" since 2016.

From July 2024, Javier Revilla Diez and his team will continue to work on the role of entrepreneurship for regional diversification and structural change from the perspective of economic geography. In particular, their research will focus on the emergence of new regional pathways and their interactions with existing industries.

With the growing length of the panel, it is becoming increasingly attractive to compare TVSEP data with complementary panels from industrialized countries such as the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) or from African countries. The data is made available to the international research community free of charge. The TVSEP project is established worldwide, as evidenced by the growing number of external users from the field of development economics in particular.Between 2016 and 04/2023, a total of 161 external users used TVSEP data for their research.
